Who made the current nominations? Have all the candidates agreed that they are interested in holding these positions?
ReplyDeleteSince all these individuals are highly qualifed for any or all of the positions, I'd like to hear their ideas for taking the club forward - such as plans to hold tournaments (internal or open to the public), ways we might offer training opportunities for intermediate to advanced players, ideas for social activities, and thoughts on raising funds to pay for activities.
This is off topic, but I would suggest adding a ladder rule which states that in the event our club participates in a competiton against another club, board positions (board 1, board 2, etc) will be determined by official ladder standings as of the end of the last regular meeting prior to the competition.
ReplyDeleteIn other words, anyone wanting to play in a future competition should play in ladder games regularly so that their playing strength is reflected in their ladder position, as it can take many weeks to schedule the matches necessary to move up the ladder.
To Anonymous: Thanks for your input. As far a nominations, if a nominee doesn't want it, they simply decline the nomination.
ReplyDeleteOnce we have our field of nominees and it gets down to two candidates, we can have a five minute speech by the candidates prior to voting.
As far as the ladder, I disagree. The ladder challenge is not the same as a challenge with another club. We have several really strong players who are not playing on the ladder, but may be interested in playing in a team tourney with another club.
This is where our club officers come in. THEY will set the team board line up based on who is interested in playing. I think most players know who is better than they are, and the actual seeding would be pretty straight forward.
Some players will complain they are seeded too high too! lol
Also, Sherlock Holmes, with the Case of Ninety Degrees still fresh in him mind, concluded that it was "elementary, my dear Anonymous. Three people were present when the list of current nominees were decided. This is because there are 3 candidates for VP. So at least 3 people were present and each nominated someone different."
ReplyDeleteAs far as who the three were, I think most don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to guess as to who those three are. I think the first four names you would think would that might meet to decide this, would almost positively get you the names.
I think you've got the cart before the horse. No consensus, no bylaws, and all your own rules. How nice for you. Did you nominate yourself too.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, consensus. "The search for consensus is the root of paralysis by analysis." There is another saying I would like to add; "At some point you have to shoot the engineers and just build the thing." Ken L., Vince V., and Mike N. are starting the building process. Come join us or stay Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteI nominate Terry Griner for president. He has been involved in chess management for many years, including the Metro league and several other clubs. signed, Vince Valente
ReplyDeleteI nominate Vince V for president and TD, Ken L for "Club Manager" and Mike N for secretary. Do away with office of VP Also we need three Trustees/Directors. I nominate Terry G, Don Jones, & Vince V.
ReplyDeleteSee the proposed bylaws in the web site for the office of the Club manager and a lot of other Info that is needed.

The TD is a volunteer/then appointed position. You don't nominate brain surgeons, webmasters or TD's. They need the talent and the desire to serve.
ReplyDeleteKen L just resigned as Club Manager so I doubt he will take that nomination.
We can discuss Trustees/Directors as possible offices (3 may be fine), but who takes over for the President should he not be available if you don't have a VP? Why eliminate one position, then add 3?
I will look at your proposed bylaws and add them to the other proposed bylaws. We need a meeting to discuss the bylaws - but not on a Monday! We are suppose to play chess on Monday.
