The Mother of all Chess Puzzles!

Ok, this one has us all stumped at LCCC.

White to mate Black in 3 moves!

Now, no cheating! Try to figure it out. It looks like there is no way out for Black, but looks can be deceiving.

Try this one, then take some aspirin for your headache.

Good luck!

  1. This is one tough puzzle, for sure! Composed very well to maximize the activity of all the pieces on the board. Normally when analyzing a position you only have a few pieces that you need to seriously consider. But the lack of pawns and centralized positions makes calculations here extremely complex.

I tried to work this out in my head (LOL), but eventually had to pull out a chess set to use. I found a four move mate fairly quickly but it took me more time than I want to admit to find the 3 move solution. I will not give the solution I came up with, but I found it after I started looking at moves which DO NOT check the black king on the first move.

Now, where did I leave the aspirin?
